SPIRITUAL CARE, CHAPLAINCY & CLINICAL PASTORAL EDUCATION (CPE)
Chaplain spiritual care provides in-depth specialist spiritual and pastoral care and counseling, which is integrated into the total care and treatment [of individuals and groups]. Chaplains provide a full range of spiritual and pastoral care and counseling that is characterized by in-depth assessment, evaluation and treatment of patients with many different spiritual and religious needs. As part of an integrated and comprehensive bio-psycho-social-spiritual approach, ascertaining a patients spiritual preferences and practices and how they wish those integrated into their care, and developing appropriate goals and outcomes of spiritual care. The chaplain also provides consultation, counseling and support to family members and staff. Professional chaplains are clinically trained to provide this care.

CPE Enrollment Requirements

Applicants must be 25 years old or older.

Applicants must be able to read, write, speak, and understand English.

Applicants must have a master's degree, or greater, from a college or university accredited by USDE/CHEA and a minimum of five (5) years of ministerial experience or applicable professional experience.

Applicants must have completed four (4) units, or 1600 hours, of USDE accredited clinical pastoral education or training from organizations that fully utilize the 31 Common Qualifications and Competencies found in the BCCI Competency Essay Writing Guide. Currently, USDE accredited CPE organizations include: Clinical Pastoral Education International (CPEI) and Institute for Clinical Pastoral Training (ICPT). ACPE CPEs awarded before November 4, 2024 will be accepted.

Applicants must be willing to adhere to their own faith tradition and be willing to learn with those of faith traditions other than their own. They must also be willing to learn from and be able to communicate effectively to those who possess different values without proselytizing or evangelizing.

Applicants must possess the ability to minister to persons in various emotional states.

Applicants must have his/her own transportation to get to and from unit sessions/clinical sites.

Applicants must adhere to the policies and procedures at their clinical site and/or place of ministry including, but not limited to, working in a smoke free environment.

Active Board Certification with: American Correctional Chaplains Association (ACCA), Association of Certified Christian Chaplains (ACCC), Association of Professional Chaplains (APC), Clinical Pastoral Education International (CPEI), National Association of Catholic Chaplains (NACC), National Association of Veterans Affairs Chaplains (NAVAC), Neshama: Association of Jewish Chaplains (NAJC) and Spiritual Care Association (SCA).
